چکیده

In molecules, electronic state transitions can occur via quantum coupling of the states. If the coupling is due to the kinetic energy of the molecular nuclei, then electronic transitions are best represented in the adiabatic frame. If the coupling is instead facilitated through the potential energy of the nuclei, then electronic transitions are better represented in the diabatic frame. In our study, we modeled these latter transitions, called “nonadiabatic transitions.” For one nuclear degree of freedom, we modeled the de-excitation of a diatomic molecule. For two nuclear degrees of freedom, we modeled the de-excitation of an ethane-like molecule undergoing cistrans isomerization. For both cases, we studied the dependence of the de-excitation on the nuclear configuration and potential energy of the molecule. We constructed a numerical model to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger Equation for two coupled wave functions. Our algorithm takes full advantage of the sparseness of the numerical system, leading to a final set of equations that is solved recursively using nothing more than the Tridiagonal Algorithm. We observed that the most effective de-excitation occurred when the molecule transitioned from a stable equilibrium configuration to an unstable equilibrium configuration. This same mechanism is known to drive fast electronic transitions in the adiabatic frame. We concluded that while the adiabatic and diabatic frames are strongly opposed physically, the mathematical mechanism driving electronic transitions in the two frames is in some sense the same. 5

Loss of molecules in magneto-electrostatic traps due to nonadiabatic transitions

We analyze the dynamics of a paramagnetic, dipolar molecule in a generic “magneto-electrostatic” trap where both magnetic and electric fields may be present. The potential energy that governs the dynamics of the molecules is found using a reduced molecular model that incorporates the main features of the system. We discuss the shape of the trapping potentials for different field geometries, as ...

Suppression of non-adiabatic losses of molecules from chip-based microtraps

Polar molecules in selected quantum states can be guided, decelerated, and trapped using electric fields created by microstructured electrodes on a chip. Here we explore how nonadiabatic transitions between levels in which the molecules are trapped and levels in which the molecules are not trapped can be suppressed. We use 12CO and 13CO (a 3 1,v = 0) molecules, prepared in the upper -doublet co...

Solvation and Hydrogen-Bonding Effects on Proton Wires

In this paper, the multiconfigurational molecular dynamics with quantum transitions (MC-MDQT) method is used to simulate the nonequilibrium real-time quantum dynamics of proton transport along water chains in the presence of solvating water molecules. The model system consists of a protonated chain of three water molecules and two additional solvating water molecules hydrogen-bonded to each end...

Stark slowing asymmetric rotors: weak-field-seeking states and nonadiabatic transitions.

Stark deceleration is one of the few methods that can be used to slow polyatomic molecules. We present calculations of Stark shift energies, a quantitative analysis of nonadiabatic transition probabilities, and orientational distribution functions applicable to typical Stark slowing conditions for the two small asymmetric rotors nitromethane and acetaldehyde. We show that asymmetric polyatomic ...
